During the high water periods it's
impossible to explore the gorge and the falls but during summer months when most of the water is used to feed the Erie Canal and the Cohoes
Power Plant there are only small amounts of water coming over the falls and much of the bottom of the gorge is dry.

The height of
the Cohoes
Falls is approximately 62 feet high. The banks around the falls are walls
of stratified rock which are rough and usually hollowed out beneath rising about 140 feet above the river for a great distance
below the falls.
